Message So, I'm feeling pretty stupid here because I'm sure there is something I'm overlooking.

I was going to use a HVLP paint gun. The gun is marked 50-70psi. It is one of the purple HF guns that gets pretty good reviews for 1 or 2 uses. Anyway, it says recommended 6 CFM or higher.

I have Makita MAC2400, which supposedly only supplies 4.8CFM @ 50psi. Well, this is obviously below the recommended 6 CFM. So, I hook up the gun and do a dry run with just air to see if my compressor will drain it's tank while the gun is fully depressed. I pull the trigger on the gun with my regulator on the compressor set at 50psi and it keeps up the entire time. My tank's pressure never goes below 100psi once the compressor kicks in. I scratched my head and made sure all valves were open full blast for air on the gun, and they were.

I then repeated this experiment @ 70psi, and again, my compressor kept up no problem.

Now, the reason why I'm asking, is that after perusing paint forums, it seems like the general recommendation is that a 5hp+ 20 gallon compressor with 10-12CFM @ 50psi is a requirement; of course this depends on the gun, but is a general recommendation.

Now, the physical "holes" on the compressor side and on the gun side are fixed...so I am left baffled as to what I'm missing. Is my test valid?
